India’s beloved writer from the hills, Ruskin Bond turned 87 on May 19, 2021. And in honour of his birthday, a new anthology of his short stories ‘All-Time Favourites for Children’ is released by Puffin. “I have been telling stories […]
“I have been telling stories all my life, and that is a story in itself,” Bond writes in the new book’s introduction, and aptly so. Titled ‘All-Time Favourites for Children’, the book is a collection of the author’s 25 most favourite short stories for kids aged 9 and above. “Many of my favourite stories are in this collection. I have added a few new ones, written in recent months,” he further says. While some of these heart-warming tales bring alive evocative incidents from Bond’s life, a few others are about his eccentric yet endearing characters like Uncle Ken, the grandmother and others. The book also features new short stories like ‘Goldfish Don’t Bark’, ‘Friends from the Forest’ among others.
The book comes full-circle with Bond fondly remembering his childhood, his love for books, and memories with his father in the last chapter ‘It’s Not a Goodbye’. Bond’s trademark writing style– simple, sincere and heartfelt– will tug at your heartstrings and give you a warm and fuzzy feeling. Each story is just a few pages long and can be read in any order, any time, anywhere. Though the book is for children, the stories can be enjoyed by readers of all age groups. And not to forget, Kashmira Sarode’s quirky illustrations make it an enriching reading experience.
