DK ropes in private medical colleges to fight Covid-19 pandemic

MANGALURU: The district administration has roped in several private medical colleges, as well as institutions teaching naturopathy and yogic sciences, to combat the pandemic. A medical college has been assigned a particular area or taluk in the Dakshina Kannada district to monitor patients, especially those above 45, who are in home isolation. For example, A J Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre has been assigned with Bantwal taluk and conducts physical triaging. The college has launched this work in the taluk.

Dakshina Kannada DHO Dr Kishore Kumar M told STOI, that the district administration has decided to micromanage the Covid situation in the district. Accordingly, colleges have been assigned with taluks or certain high-risk areas in the district, to closely monitor patients in home isolation.

Dr Kishore said as soon as a patient tests positive, ASHA workers visit the patient and provide the necessary instructions. The role of medical colleges comes to the fore, five days after a person has tested positive. “The medical team focuses on high-risk category patients, who are 45 and above, and have comorbidities. They will visit the homes of such patients and monitor blood pressure, sugar level and blood oxygen level. If they find any health complications, the team will immediately refer the patient to a hospital. “While the Ayush department is involved in triaging over phone, the medical colleges will conduct physical triaging. The medical colleges are providing the service free-of-cost,” the DHO added.

Dr Pradeep Senapati, associate professor, department of community medicine, A J Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, said that people have been cooperative so far in this regard. “The challenge is to devise a Covid care plan based on the home condition of each patient. While planning Covid care, we have to consider various factors such as the number of patients tested, the number of positive cases in each house, the children and senior citizens in the family, number of washrooms in the house and so on,” he said. Currently, his team on the field includes 25 doctors, including a specialist as well as junior and senior residents.
